The Australian Wheat Board recently increased its presence in Victoria with a number of new grain receival facilities. These sites, located in the wheat belt, have bunker storage and rapid rail load capacity to take grain direct from growers at harvest and then load out to train for delivery to port for export.
The silos, provided by ME&C at two Victorian sites (Sea Lake and Charlton), have a capacity of 1830 Cubic Metres (1450-1550 tonnes of wheat). Each site has two of these silos built over the rail loop. This allows loading of a typical 2,500T train in two hours. It is anticipated that the efficiencies grain from reduced handling and freight costs will see a greater return to grain growers who supply these facilities.
ME&C supplied and erected the silos, meeting tight deadlines which saw the facilities operational in time for the harvest in November, 2001
